When I price my illustration fees, I use the amount of colors and complexity of concept to determine my time and overall cost. Learning as much as possible about the company, the project and the future goals helps me be more at service to my customers in other areas like printing and marketing. Depending on how the image is going to be printed can sometimes change the cost of the illustration. It’s my job to make it as easy and as cost effective as possible for my customers.

If I’m not creating art for silkscreen I have found that the heat presses and processes have become much better and the outcome is almost similar to silkscreen in terms of feel. I still use spot colors in my designs regardless of printing goals. After trying the heat presses for a while I gravitated towards using one myself. The final product has a soft hand and the stiffness after the first wash is gone. The image stays bright and will last a long time. I use high-end substrates for all my merchandising products.
